Healthy Dessert Tips

All-Natural Dessert Tips

The following healthy dessert tips are from Alison's upcoming cookbook, Desserts for Every Body.

It doesn't matter what kind of dessert you are making—be it vegan, raw, gluten-free or full of cream and sugar—if you start off with natural, organic and pure ingredients, you're taking a good first step in the right direction towards gratifying, decadent and ultimately healthier desserts.

When you buy organic foods, you know (at least for now) that what you are purchasing has been treated naturally without genetic engineering, hormones or artificially produced preservatives and colors. And the end result is fabulous food that you know is clean and wholesome.

Use the following considerations as a guideline when making your natural baking choices:

  • Use organically grown ingredients whenever you can
  • Use sugars that are minimally processed
  • Try to incorporate whole grain flours into baked goods and avoid bleached
    and bromated flours
  • Avoid ingredients with artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners
  • Never use hydrogenated fats
  • Use mostly seasonal fruits that are organically grown

It's sometimes hard to remain centered in the kitchen, especially when preparing desserts-- just one look at the photo in the cookbook is enough to bring your mind out of the present and into the moment where you're indulging in the ecstasy of every fulfilling bite!

But, unfortunately, the cake hasn't been made yet, and there's plenty to do to get it ready. The more organized you are at the beginning, the smoother the whole process will go and the sooner you'll be able to "have your cake and eat it too".

Use the following as a guide to help you remain organized, efficient and in command throughout your duration in the kitchen:

  • Read the whole recipe through one time before doing anything so that you know what to expect and can get a general feel of the recipe and how it is prepared
  • Clean and organize your work area (including the sink and counter tops) so that you have plenty of space and clean equipment to work with
  • Read through the ingredients list again and gather the appropriate ingredients so that they are all at easy reach before you start
  • Have any dicing and slicing done, dried fruits soaked or any pre-baking preparations completed before delving into the recipe
  • Have the basic equipment you need, like measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls and spatulas out and ready to go—you can even measure everything out beforehand for ease and efficiency
